Wild Water Sprint

As is the spirit of Riverfest we are always looking for new ways to take to the water. This year the kayaking events will kick off with a Wild Water sprint race. some of Ireland's top racers will be there including some of the national squad who are currently preparing for the 2007 World Cup which will take place this summer.

This event will kick off at about 1200 and is free to enter, so if you fancy giving it a try get down to Curragower between 1030 and 1115 on Saturday May 5th to register. There will be some Wave Hoppers there to try out or you can bring along your own boat.

The race course is only 300 metres so it should only take you a minute or so and you will get to see how your time compares to the experts. A handicap system will also apply to those in smaller boats so you may even win.

And don't worry the other events don't start until after this so you can enter them too.

Stay tuned for more updates and don't forget to pre-register (riverfest@ulac.ie)

The plan so far...

The programme for 2007 has been thrashed out and the following are the events as they will happen, times are not set yet as we have to wait until closer the date.

Registration will open on Monday 16th of April

Saturday 5th May

WW Sprint
Some of Irelands top white water racers will show their skills, racing composite boats through the falls against the clock.

Gower-X
Curragower falls will become a racecourse for groups of 4 kayakers to race head to head. Launching from the eddy above the falls kayakers will have to out muscle and out smart competitors to complete the course and be the first to cross the finish line. The winner of each heat will move forward to the next round until we have a Gower-X champion.

Rapid Race
This race is simple; all paddlers get on above the falls, the hooter sounds and first kayaker down the falls and across the line from each category wins!

Sunday 6th May

King of the Wave / Queen of the Wave
Each year kayakers battle it out to take the crown of King and Queen of the wave. All the kayakers gather in the eddy above the wave, they then have 3 minutes to drop on and surf the wave. The last guy and girl surfing gain the title of King and Queen of Gower 2007.

X-pression session
Seen as the blue ribbon event this is a showcase of freestyle skill and talent. A simple format rewards kayakers who show some style, give it everything and go big. After two 30 second rides the judges will reward the best kayakers from each of the 5 categories, juniors, ladies sport, men’s sport, ladies expert and men’s expert.

Syncro-surfing
This event is new to the programme; it is a team based freestyle competition. Teams of 2 kayakers will have 30seconds to put together a synchronized wave ride to impress the judges. Each ride will be scored on style, synchronization and originality.
